“Children with learning disabilities frequently have the double handicap of appearing not to have any handicaps at all. Otherwise normal, bright and intelligent, they cannot understand why learning is so difficult and their frustrations so misread.”
— Learning Disabilities of America
Learning disabilities affect about 15%, or one in seven, of the U.S. population – and can have a profound impact on families. A learning disability lasts throughout life and influences the way individuals of average to above average intelligence receive, process or express information. Some common learning disabilities are dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, verbal and auditory processing disorders and non-verbal learning disorders. In addition, attention disorders such as ADHD are reported to exist in 3-10% of the population. Although learning disabilities and ADHD often coexist, the two are not the same.
